If people better understand what public health is, they are more likely to
work with public health agencies or programs to solve local health issues
and problems. How much do
people really understand about public health? According to a 1999 national
poll, only 27% identified “programs that maintain healthy living
conditions” when asked what they thought “public health” meant. This element of the PHIP work plan will develop strategies to
inform and involve the public about public health, using messages that
have been tested for clarity.
