Public Health: Everybody Counts!

Secretary of Health
Mary Selecky

Everybody Counts! is a report about the Public Health workforce in Washington state. These are the people who are always working to improve the health of people who live in our state. They make an enormous contribution to our quality of life.

This report describes the results of a survey conducted in November and December 2003 by people who work at the Washington State Department of Health and in 35 local health departments and districts throughout the state. More than 3500 people completed the survey among a total workforce of about 5400.

This is the first effort of its kind. We used an on-line survey to gather information and we encouraged response from everyone who works in a governmental public health agency in our state. We plan to use the results to gain a better understanding of the educational background of our workers, the different jobs they do, the amount of experience they bring to their work, and how long they plan to stay in the field.

In the future, we hope to expand our survey effort to include many people who are partners in protecting and improving the health of the public-- including people who work in various community-based agencies, health clinics, and hospitals.

I am very excited to share this first step with you and hope you enjoy learning about who we are and what we do.
