Helping people in Washington choose healthy foods and active lifestyles

The goal of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) is to encourage people to choose healthy foods and active lifestyles consistent with the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the My Pyramid Food Guidance System.

SNAP-Ed, formerly BFNEP, is targeted to people who receive, or eligible to receive, Basic Food Program benefits (food stamps).

Basic Food Program Clients

  • 12 percent Washington residents are served by the Basic Food Program.

  • 40 percent are younger than 18.

  • 42 percent are 18-49.

  • 8 percent are 50-59.

  • 8 percent are over 60.

  • Only 57 percent of eligible people receive food stamp benefits and assistance.

  • A 2008 report (PDF, 145KB) showed significant food insecurity in Washington, particularly in rural counties.
