Maternal and Infant Health

What does Maternal and Infant Health do?

  • Focuses on preventive and primary care for pregnant women, mothers, and infants.

  • Supports healthy birth outcomes by improving health and support services for pregnant and postpartum women.

Maternal and Infant Health accomplishes its work in four major areas

Assessment activities enable health care professionals and community partners to understand the needs of women and infants by gathering data about characteristics of pregnant and postpartum women, services they use, and services that would be helpful.  Maternal and Infant Health uses this data to plan programs, services, and develop policies to promote maternal and infant health.

Best practice materials and other resources are available from Maternal and Infant Health for health care professionals.  These materials cover a variety of topics to improve quality of care for women and infants.

Maternal and Infant Health provides and promotes services to keep pregnant women and newborns healthy.

We collaborate with numerous agencies to provide and promote services for pregnant women and newborns.

Our program priorities include:

  • Pregnancy planning
  • Access to prenatal care
  • Domestic violence during pregnancy
  • Smoking cessation
  • Alcohol and drug use during pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Nutrition
  • Sleep position
  • Environmental exposure to tobacco smoke
  • Provider information and resources
  • Additional Helpful Information
