Background
We are developing rules for outdoor
reuse of greywater for subsurface irrigation.
RCW
90.46.015 requires us to adopt a greywater rule by the end of
the year. The use of greywater, which includes flows from showers,
sinks, washing machines, kitchen sink, and dishwashers, can reduce
the use of potable water and promote water conservation. However,
greywater can contain harmful bacteria, viruses, and chemicals. The
new rule will establish a statewide framework for greywater reuse
that protects human health and the environment. The rule will not
address greywater reuse inside buildings (for example, using
greywater for toilets). The Washington State Building Code Council
is developing rules for this aspect of greywater reuse.
We've established a rule advisory committee that is providing
input to the
department as we develop draft rule language. We are looking at
low-technology, low-cost options for greywater systems, and discussing with the committee what is scientifically required in this
regard. The committee meetings are open to the public.
We have established a listserv through which we send
information and updates on the rulemaking process by email. If
you would like to receive these emails, you can subscribe to
the Greywater Reuse Listserve by going to

instructions listed there. You can unsubscribe at any time.
